Child Custody

Child custody is generally the most highly emotional aspect of a divorce.  When going through a divorce involving children, one of the first questions will be who will get custody.

In Washington, mediation is required before the court can make any decision regarding custody or visitation. In child custody mediation, a trained court counselor assists parents in coming to a mutual agreement regarding custody. In many cases, parties can ultimately agree on custody and visitation issues without the need for a court order. If you and your spouse are unable to reach an agreement on child custody, a judge will hear your case and issue an order that clearly defines the custodial arrangement. Washington law places the child’s best interests as a priority in determining custody awards. When an agreement cannot be reached between the parties, the advice and representation from a family law attorney can often make a tremendous difference.

Our office is sensitive to the turmoil that children can be exposed to in a contentious divorce and will work with you to ensure the best interests of the child are protected.
